The Web Wintility Module must be installed in a computer with direct Internet access.

How does Wintility differ from other knowledge management solutions on the market?
Wintility lets you define parameters (such as keywords and folder associations) for which material to capture. Instead of depending on users to actively send the information to the knowledge base, Wintility captures the information automatically, in real-time.

Wintility Pro is compatible with what types of documents?
Wintility Pro is compatible with all types of documents. Because it does not require a separate document repository, no transformation of any kind takes place to make information "readable". Any extension can be included in the Wintility workspace. Whether or not you can open and alter the document depends if you have the authoring program in your computer. In any case, with or without the authoring program installed in your PC,  you can examine the text content of the document in the viewer (TipView) window.

Do I need to buy a separate database (SQL, Oracle) to run Wintility Pro?
No, Wintility does not require that you purchase a separate database. Wintility installs on your network and creates references to the documents located anywhere in the LAN.

How is Wintility's Master/Client relationship different from a Client/Server?
In a Client/Server relationship, clients rely on the server
for processing power.

In the Wintility Pro Master/Client relationship, the Master module stores the user database, license control, collaboration coordination and other system information and must be used in conjunction with a Client.
To maintain compatibility with all networks types, Wintility Pro doesn't have a server module.

Do I need an web server to publish my information?
No. You can publish your information using our public portal at web.wintility.com.

In the case that you would like to place WebWintility on your company Intranet or Internet site, you would need to have a web server.

In either case, documents and the related catalogs are not stored in the WebWintility portal. They remain in their original location, usually the Company’s Local Network.

How does WebWintility protect my information?
WebWintility features a proprietary protocol that allows remote users to access Wintility Pro documents through a peer-to-peer socket connection.

This process is subject to three levels of security.

Firewall level: the WebWintility target Catalogs are protected by the company firewall and are not accessed directly through the Internet, only through the WebWintility Protocol Server.

User Authorization Level: the user needs a password to access Catalogs and solicit information. This authentication is done by consulting the WebWintility machine register within the company.

Profile based access: The Catalog administrator defines profiles for all those who will access documents. Through these profiles, the administrator defines exactly which parts of the Catalog are made available to each user or group. All solicitations are recorded in a history file.

How do users view and access my information?
When a user tries to access catalogs through the Internet, his/her computer establishes an http connection with the portal to see if the catalog is available and get the IP of the computer where the information is stored. If the information is available, the WebWintility user's computer tries to establish a socket connection.

If a socket connection can't be established, the browser automatically tries to establish an http connection with the relay system. This Java based relay system then establishes a socket connection with the desired computer.

You can opt to use the relay system located inside PX Solutions (web.wintility.com) or install the components (supplied by PX Solutions) in your company Internet/Intranet site.

Do I need to have Wintility Pro to use Wintility Guard?
Yes. Wintility Guard is an add-on module for Wintility Pro.

Top

How does the Wintility Guard area provide additional security for my documents?
The Wintility Guard module allows users to assign a specific location(s) within their network to place documents that can only be accessed through Wintility. Documents do not need to be moved to a separate repository.

Because the Wintility Pro environment creates references to documents stored throughout the network, documents outside of a Wintility Guard area can be accessed through both Wintility Pro and Windows Explorer (as long as they have permission from the network administrator).

When inside the Wintility Guard area, all other paths to the document, including Windows Explorer, are blocked and users can only access them  through Wintility.

If you give a user permission to access a Guard Area, they can have  three types of permission - read only, read and write access, full control.

What is the difference between the Wintility Guard Area and the Wintility Guard Server?

The Wintility Guard Server is a component that comes when you purchase the Wintility Guard Module. You simply need to install it in the computer that will act as the server, or the computer where your secured documents will be kept. This component processes the requests to get a document and liberates it if authorized. It authenticates the user permission by accessing the users database.

A Wintility Guard Area is the division within an area that is specified. For example, let's say that you install the server your computer. In this computer, you can define (using the Wintility Guard Wizard) an area called "sales" . By doing this, you determine the area of the computer that will store documents that are sent to the secured area called "sales".

When someone requests this document, their request will be relayed through the server, authenticated in the users database and then given access to this area (The "share" option of this area in the LAN/WAN must be turned off).

Top

If I want 5 Wintility Guard Areas, do I have to buy 5 Guard Modules?

No. Unless you want to install a Guard Server in each computer. The Wintility Guard Server processes requests to access specific documents, so if the majority of your documents will remain secured in a single computer/server, you have no need for multiple Guard Modules.

After installing the server, you can define as many areas as you would like. You can establish different users, and security criteria for each. You can buy only one Module and create various areas.
